SSVF is a Veterans Affairs funded program which is delivered through Primary Health Care. This program is focused on helping homeless and unstably-housed Veterans and their families living in Warren, Polk, Dallas, Jasper, Story, and Marshall Counties. Services provided include:

CASE MANAGEMENT services that will assist participants in obtaining VA and other public benefits, including: health care referrals, daily living referrals, personal financial planning, fiduciary and payee referrals, legal services, housing counseling services, employment and training referrals.

TEMPORARY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE (TFA) which may include rent assistance, moving expenses, security and utility deposits, transportation, and child care. All financial services based on eligibility and available funding.

Emergency assistance provides financial aid for families with children to alleviate a life threatening circumstance or to assist in attaining self-sufficiency; residents must have a late, eviction or disconnect (utilities) notice to be eligible for this program.

Also covers residents of Andalusia Township, IL.

Emergency housing assistance through FEMA funds; those seeking assistance may apply when the money becomes available around February or March and it is first come first serve basis; must have been denied both General and Emergency Assistance through the township.

Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation is a Community Action Agency. Family Service Specialists work with individuals and families facing difficult and crisis situations. They are able to provide assistance in connecting to needed community programs and services. In addition, base on funding and donations, the office can support a crisis fund which allows them to provide assistance with rent, medical and prescription expenses, gas money, utilities, and other basic necessities when the household is facing an emergency situation. The agency actively seeks funds for the crisis program and all funds donated to a county stay in that county and are used to support the residents of that county.

Community Response is designed to reduce unnecessary involvement of child welfare and juvenile justice while increasing the informal and community supports for youth and families. By utilizing Central Navigation, the goal is to coordinate existing resources and match participants with a resource to either solve an immediate need or develop a longer-term coaching relationship.

Cross Outreach is a homelessness prevention program providing limited assistance with basic needs such as rent, security deposits, electric or water bills, laundry vouchers or storage costs for households in transition as funding is available. Does not assist with car gas.

***Rent, security deposits, electric, water and laundry voucher assistance requires clients to email a help request on the 3rd Monday of every month between 8 am-8 pm.

2025 Intake Dates are as follows (3rd Monday of each month, 8 am-8 pm): Apr 21, May 19, Jun 16, Jul 21, Aug 18, Sep 15, Oct 20, Nov 17 and Dec 15, 2025.

General Assistance provides temporary assistance for basic or special needs to low income persons who reside in Boone County. May help with the following financial needs when funding is available:

Rental Assistance may be available to those in need. Will not help with deposits.

Utility Assistance: November 1-April 30, anyone seeking help for utilities must go through the LIHEAP program first. Those applying for Utility Assistance from G.A. must have an acceptance or denial letter from LIHEAP.

Cremation Expense Assistance may be available to those who meet the income guidelines.

Medical Expense Assistance may be available for medical/prescription supplies and assistance with transportation to out of town appointments.

Serves as the Satellite Office for DHS Forms & Fax for Boone residents. DHS has been relocated to Story County at 126 South Kellogg, Suite 101, Ames, Iowa.

These funds can be used to pay one month rent (no deposits) for those in danger of being evicted from their home due to nonpayment of rent. Assistance is also available to help with water bills.

Individuals may call to request assistance for basic life needs, which may include financial assistance for utilities and rent, furniture, prescriptions (non-narcotic), and car repair. If St. Vincent de Paul may be able to assist, a home visit will need to be scheduled. If St. Vincent de Paul cannot help, the person will receive information regarding other organizations that may be able to assist. Home visits are completed in person and in pairs, to determine how to provide assistance appropriately related to basic needs.

Does not provide assistance for rent deposit.
