Offers assistance to residents of the Greene County to remove barriers to self-sufficiency and economic self-support. Services are provided in payment for such needs as rent, food, utilities, and county burials. Recipients must meet certain income guidelines.

Utility assistance for low income households, including the LIHEAP program during winter months.

LIHEAP aids qualifying low-income Iowa households (homeowners and renters) in the payment of a portion of their residential heating costs for the winter heating season, to encourage regular utility payments and promote energy awareness, and to encourage reduction of energy usage through energy efficiency and client education.

Offers limited emergency assistance for, rent (last $100), utilities (last $75), diapers, other basic needs (such as hygiene products) for individuals and families who are experiencing economic hardship, assistance based on an immediate precipitating event, refers callers to appropriate community agencies that may be able to assist.

Advises and aids veterans and their dependents in applying for federal benefits through compensation or pension claims. Emergency financial assistance for basic necessities such as rent, mortgage interests payments, utilities, and burial expense may be available. Can also assists with applications for benefits made available by federal, state or local laws.

Provides help with rent and utilities. If funding permits may help with other basic needs.

Case management, client needs assessment, goal setting/plan development, and assistance to stabilize housing for individuals and families. Services vary and may include assistance with rent, utilities, rental and/or utility deposits, depending upon verification of need and progress being made on goals. Eligibility and re-certification requirements may vary by program.

Limited funding is available and only offered during certain times of the year.

Financial assistance to qualifying persons residing in the township for rent, utilities, medical expenses, and transportation expense.

General Assistance is available to those who qualify. Emergency assistance is available one time only.

Offers assistance to individuals and families who are past due on their rent or utility payments and are at risk of becoming homeless or are homeless due to a recent financial crisis affecting their ability to pay housing costs. If funding available, may also be able to help with car repair assistance.

LIHEAP (low income home energy assistance program) provides assistance with a utility bill. Applications are accepted November 1 - April 30; for elderly or disabled individuals applications are accepted starting October 1. Income must fall within 200% of poverty guideline. Call for an appointment. A letter has been sent to those who may be eligible for early application in August or September.

**This program is not designed to pay a household's total energy costs. The program will provide supplemental assistance based on several factors. This is a one-time payment to your energy provider.

Opportunity for reconnection of Ameren gas/ electric services in time for winter of 2024/25.

Those who meet the LIHEAP income guidelines are eligible for reinstatement of services Oct 1, 2024. They must pay 1/5 of their outstanding bill upfront and agree to a payment plan of 12 installments.

All others (those who aren't considered low income by LIHEAP standards) are eligible for reinstatement of service, these customers must pay 1/3 of their outstanding bill upfront and agree to a payment plan of 12 installments.

Also encourages households to make regular utility payments, to promote energy awareness and to encourage reduction of energy usage. All customers applying for this prgram will simultaneously be making an application for weatherization assistance as required by state law.

Assistance is based on household income. size, type of fuel, and type of housing. Applications accepted October 1-April 30 for the elderly and disabled households and November 1-April 30 for the rest of the households.

Offers assist to suburban and rural areas of Polk, Dallas and Warren Counties with financial assistance, food, hygiene, home goods and other needs as items allow. Stops vary for each county:

• Des Moines - 2nd Monday of every month
  • Salvation Army Thrift Store, 4620 SE 14th Street, 9 am-11 am and 1 pm-3 pm
• Indianola - 4th Monday of every month
  • WeLift Job Search Center, 106 East 2nd Avenue, 9 am-11 am and 1 pm-3 pm

  • Provided for work related circumstance, school clothing, winter clothing

• Pathway of Hope and Case Management:
  • Available to individuals/families with children under the age of 18 (counseling, financial assistance, resource advocate)

Emergency financial assistance for basic necessities such as rent or mortgage payments, utilities and food may be available for Veterans and their dependents. Can also assists with applications for benefits made available by federal, state or local laws.

Provides rides to medical appointments to the VA Hospital in either Knoxville or Des Moines. Call at least 5 days ahead with the date of appointment and the time and location.

The application period is from October 1-April 30 for elderly and disabled households and November 1-April 30th for the rest of the households. Persons applying must meet 200% poverty guidelines.

LIHEAP also offers a crisis program that may be able to assist homeowners who are with no heat or limited heat. The furnace component for crisis runs October 1-April 30th.
