COMMUNITY INTEGRATION CLASSES | OPTIMAE LIFESERVICES - CENTRAL IOWA REGION

Offers classes for those with a mental illness, an intellectual disability, or other disabling conditions. Classes help clients learn and develop skills to live successfully in the community and live independently at home.

ADVOCACY AND SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES | ILLINOIS/IOWA CENTER FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING

Advocacy and services for persons with all types of disabilities including skills training, peer counseling, information and referral, and technical assistance about the Americans with Disabilities Act.

- Blind Services works with individuals one-on-one to instruct persons who have lost (or are losing) their vision, on how to read Braille and organize their household and travel. Produces and replicates Braille materials. Translates materials such as menus and brochures into Braille and produces multiple copies as a service to the community. (There is a normal cost per Braille page produced, plus $25 per hour for formatting.)

- Captioning at Real Time (CART) provides the translation of spoken words into text using a stenotype machine operated by a stenographer/reporter. Real-time software is used to display the text onto a computer monitor, and a projector or other device is used to display the text on a television or larger screen. CART is especially valuable in large meetings or in communications with a person who is deaf or has hearing loss. CART can be utilized in following settings: community events and workshops, government, legal, educational, medical, theater and auditorium, and captioning of movies and videos.

- Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services provides one-on-one services for independent living skills training, information and referral, advocacy, and peer counseling. Serves as a TTY Distribution site for ITAC (Illinois Telecommunications Access Commission), which provides free TTY devices to Illinois residents. Distributes applications for Iowa TTY distributions for Iowa residents who are qualified (speech impaired or hard of hearing). Distributes amplified phones for residents of Illinois of all ages who have a difficult time hearing on the phone.

- Provides information and resources on low-tech independent living devices such as magnifiers, talking watches, etc., when funding is available.

- Housing assistance provides information and problem-solving assistance with locating and securing affordable, accessible housing, including research into public and private-sector housing markets.

- Information and Referral service provides information through Illinois/Iowa Center for Independent Living's system and library. Requests for information can be made by phone, mail, or in person, and can include loans of library materials.

- Outreach services offers presentations, brochures, media releases, public service announcements, media interviews, and video programs to inform the public of programs and services offered.

- Volunteers are utilized in programs, services, and office operations; volunteers receive training and supervision appropriate to their duties.

CONNECTION CENTER | CENTRAL IOWA CENTER FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING

Offers a place for those with disabilities to socialize with peers and engage in various classes, activities and support groups. Activities and classes focus on health and wellbeing, independent living skills, and employment. Information and referrals to other resources can also be provided.

Offers a day habilitation program focusing on socialization skills and community integration. Program includes community participation, increased independence, skill development, activity alternatives to avoid or reduce time in a more restrictive environment.

DAY HABILITATION PROGRAM | CHILDSERVE

Assists individuals in developing or maintaining life skills and community integration. Programming is coordinated on-site and in the community to enhance opportunities to learn in a variety of environments. Day Habilitation services are designed to assist young adults to successfully transition to adulthood by increasing community integration and life skills.

In Ames, Day Habilitation is only offered in the summer.
In Johnston, Day Habilitation is offered year-round.

ON WITH LIFE AT NEW HORIZONS CENTER | ON WITH LIFE, INC.

Provides day and respite services, and addresses individual needs and desires for care, for informed choices and the individual's vision for the future. OWL is an approved provider for the Brain Injury Waiver Program, which was created by Iowa State Legislature in 1996. Services provided through the program include, supported Community Living-designed to assist the consumer with daily living needs, which includes, but are not limited to, community skills, personal needs, budgeting, social skills, home management and individual advocacy.

LIVING SERVICES FOR ADULTS WITH DISABILITIES | CHRISTIAN OPPORTUNITY CENTER

HCBS (HOME AND COMMUNITY BASED SERVICES) programs provide training and support to people living in shared homes in the community with opportunities for learning skills to help develop independence. (Pella/Knoxville and Indianola/Des Moines regions).

SPIRITUAL SERVICES are available to all clients.

- Assists qualified individuals who are blind or have low-vision learn the skills needed to maintain an independent lifestyle.

- Provides a variety of low-vision aids and assistive devices at no cost.

- Offers referrals for additional services such as community orientation, mobility training, and guide dog services.

REHABILITATION SERVICES | OPTIMAE LIFESERVICES - CENTRAL IOWA REGION

Offers rehabilitation services to those with mental illness and intellectual disabilities. Services are designed to help clients overcome barriers and acquire or relearn skills to help them live independently in the community through occupational therapy services. Services include, but are not limited to, learning about money management, paying bills, cleaning and house maintenance, self-advocacy and self-care.

SUPPORTED COMMUNITY LIVING | EASTERSEALS IOWA

Provides supported community living (SCL). SCL gives individuals with disabilities the opportunity to live as independently as possible in the community. Service includes support with safety, housekeeping, finances, communication, employment, socialization, transportation and wellness.

Hourly supported community living provides service from just a few hours per month up to 8 hours per day. This goal focused program maintains the independence clients currently have while working toward greater independence. Clients access the community in varying ways to increase their own independence like using public transportation, grocery shopping, working out and forming meaningful relationships with peers.

24-hour supported community living serves adults who require a higher amount of service hours in their place of residence and the community. Clients learn independent living skills while working toward the goal of greater independence.

YOUTH EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY | RAMP DISABILITY RESOURCES AND SERVICES

RAMP works with students and their families to learn the laws that protect the rights of a student with a disability, how to navigate the maze of community services, and to learn the skills required to achieve their goals.

Services include legal rights training, self-advocacy skills training, peer support, independent living skills training, transition planning guidance, educational workshops, and assistance with letter writing.
