Assistance may also be available for a limited period of time to the children of a parent looking for employment.

Advises and aids veterans and their dependents in applying for federal benefits through compensation or pension claims. Emergency financial assistance for basic necessities such as rent or mortgage payments, utilities and food may be available for Veterans and their dependents. Can also assists with applications for benefits made available by federal, state or local laws.


Provides rides to medical appointments to the VA Hospital in either Knoxville or Des Moines. Call at least 5 days ahead with the date of appointment and the time and location.

Provides assistance to residents who are needy and poor and in need of immediate assistance and who cannot obtain assistance from any other source. Recipients must be at least 18 years of age and meet current income and resource guidelines.

Assistance may be provided for rent, utilities, or indigent burial, to name a few. A voucher system is utilized with direct payment to the vendor, never cash. General Relief is unable to assist with deposits or first month rent payments.

Financially assists individuals so that they can remain in the most appropriate living arrangement for their individualized needs. Eligible clients can reside in their own home, an apartment, an assisted living facility, a licensed mental health facility, a center for the developmentally disabled, a room and board situation, or in a nursing home.

The AABD program can also, in certain circumstances, provide essential items to qualified recipients such as guardian/conservator fees, home repairs, furniture, appliances, etc.
