Items that may be borrowed from or used in the library include DVDs, large print materials, audio books, magazines, and newspapers. The library also provides access to computers, WIFI access available, reference, and information services.

Assists in the Library and Archives Research. Whether researching as an author, educator, student, reporter, curator, archeologist, preservationist, historian or genealogist, research materials are provided on microfilm, and books. Most books are browsable on the shelves. Patrons who are interested in accessing the State Archives and Special Collections or Library materials that are not on the open stacks are encouraged to make an appointment and advise staff two business days in advance about the materials they would like to research. Offers library services to the residents of Des Moines, including curbside pickup for requested books from the online catalog, with confirmation provided when items are ready for pickup. The library also provides notary services, access to meeting spaces for public or private gatherings, and on-site computers for public use.

STATE LAW LIBRARY Capitol Building can provide legal information primarily at expert level, legislative information, including up-to-date bill histories, and selected federal publications including the federal register.

Magazines and internet access are also available along with printing and copier access, Individual computer lessons can be arranged at customer convenience. A meeting room is available for use by organizations for use as a study or reading room.
